10th Anniversary Field Blend Release Party

At Kitzke we have been looking forward to this release impatiently for the last two years! The first ever Kitzke Bordeaux blend will be released to celebrate our tenth vintage on Candy Mountain. It encompasses exactly what we believe we are blessed with here on Candy Ridge Vineyard. Bordeaux Varietals!

Kitzke 10th Anniversary Barrel Select Field Blend:

41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc, 28% Malbec, 3% Petit Verdot

Kitzke Cellars 2015 Barrel Select, Columbia Valley, $65: An estate vineyard field blend, this Bordeaux-style offering is a big, plush wine that reveals rich flavors of ripe plum, cherry, and a hint of spice and coconut. –Andy Perdue

The Kitzke Candy Ridge Vineyard has quietly been nabbing some of the Northwest’s top awards from our Cabernet’s continuous “Double Gold” at the Seattle Wine Awards since 2008, to “Best of Class” Cabernet Franc. Although it was lumped into Columbia Valleys AVA in the past Candy Ridge Vineyard is now making a name for itself along side Candy Mountain in hopes of becoming one of Washington’s newest AVA’s.

“Our Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc have continuously proven to be some of the states best single vineyard Bordeaux varietals. The Petit Verdot has always been a standout to me but is always used in blending. The day I got involved in the winemaking I said to myself we are going to make one of the best Bordeaux Blends in the world one day from this vineyard. I truly believe that. This is just the first one and I can’t wait to see the future of this wine!”

Candy Ridge Vineyard may look like a backyard project on Candy Mountain in Richland Washington but what’s right underneath your feet that makes it stand apart. Candy Ridge is built on a very small alluvial fan that was made when the Missoula Floods flowed right between Candy Mountain and Badger Mountain into Richland. Depositing large amounts of gravel, basalt, caliche, and granite in our soils. It is such a small area with expressive unique terroir that showcases depth and subtleties that aren’t overpowered by tannin.

Join us this Saturday and Sunday to taste our Barrel Select Field Blend before it is reserved fro our Wine Club only. This will be a one time tasting of the wine due to the fact that 70 cases were all the was produced. There will be 1.5L Magnums for those looking to cellar something special for decades to come!

Harvest is a busy, yet rewarding time of year for the Kitzke family.

Waking up every morning to the crisp air and feeling the first light warmth of the sun peaking through the vines. The smell of the vineyard and fresh cut clusters surrounds you as you pick the mature grapes that you have been nurturing the whole year for this perfect moment. Hoping that you captured the perfect balance of sugar & acidity to express your terroir.

Relieved that half of the process is over, we continue forward knowing the next steps of obsession are starting:  sorting, crushing, and monitoring fermentation.  This is a very time consuming yet magical process. Simultaneously tasting the wines throughout fermentation while waiting for that perfect balance of flavor & tannin before it is pressed into barrels for the next two years.

We put our all into the vineyards & cellar in hopes of sharing another amazing vintage with you. Thank you for your continued support and inspiration.  A big thank you goes out to everyone who volunteered their time to help us during harvest!  We can’t wait to share the vintages to come! cheers!
